Well Design (General)

¤ Drilling needs eg. water well, monitoring well etc., and accurate anticipation of geology to determine appropriate drilling technique are critical ingredients in determining well design. Properly designed and constructed water wells should balance output yield and drawdown consistent with the aquifer properties including geology, transmissivity values etc.

¤ Local drilling conditions have a major impact on well design and construction.

¤ All wells have two major components; The casing and Intake. The casing houses the pumping equipment (pump chamber) and serves as a conduit for water. The intake portion of the well can be screened or open depending on the geology, but intake design must take into account local hydrogeological conditions. Casing design and construction of the well should address target depth and borehole diameter, screen material / slot size. A borehole design should also include sealing of borehole annulus in upper section of well to prevent surface / shallow groundwater contamination migrating into target abstraction source.

¤ Well development is the process of bringing the well to its maximum efficiency, for instance by clearing out sediment and increasing the permeability of the aquifer close to the well.
